OPOP - One Plate, One Price - is a revolutionary approach to casual dining. A canteen style restaurant serving flavourful, plentiful and modestly priced dishes, most likely to have come from humble beginnings. We reminisce of a time when we came together to share the simplest yet most delicious of meals, as equals. History shows us that restaurants play an integral role in the life of a thriving society, they have a unique role to play in the recovery of our communities. Hospitality employs over 8% of working adults in the UK, better employment practises within the sector could create the ripple effect needed for a paradigm shift in so-called ‘low skill’ employment. Too many people in the UK lack access to good food and there is an obesity epidemic that is often driven by socio-economic factors, restaurants can part of changing this narrative by modelling healthy eating habits in a sociable rather than a clinical setting. We see future opportunities to be part of a social prescribing programme, running workshops in our restaurants and at our training school. Supporting our restaurant group will be our hospitality academy - a centre of learning for our people teaching the operational skills specific to our industry as well as human skills such as conflict resolution and how to deliver feedback that are fundamental in any job role. Key to our approach is that training and exemplary employment practises, we change the perception of a career in hospitality from one that is unambitious to one that is respected and referred by other industries. Our training school will also look to support the young and long-term unemployed, with many unfilled positions within the hospitality sector there is an opportunity to support people into these roles with a renewed confidence and transferable skill set. Good food and good work are a right not a privilege, we want to see greater access to both in communities throughout the UK.
